01
WHO CAN HAVE A SPORTS MASSAGE IN CHORLEY?
Anyone can have a massage! Massage is suitable for young people, adults and older people; you don't need to be an athlete or "sporty" to benefit. People under 16 will need to have a parent present during their treatment.
02
WHAT CONDITIONS CAN SPORTS MASSAGE HELP WITH?
Sports massage can help with problems with muscles and joints - whether is that is an ache or pain, stiffness or soreness or restricted movement. It can also help clients feel mentally relaxed and help prevent muscle aches after extensive exercise.
03
CAN I HAVE A MASSAGE IF I AM UNWELL?
Although sports massage is great for aches and pains, some conditions are "contra-indicated", meaning that massage isn't a suitable treatment.
For instance, people having certain cancer treatments, or people with uncontrolled hypertension. Having a massage while suffering with a cold or fever can make the body feel more tender and is not advised, and pregnant women should only have a massage after the end of their first trimester.
If you have recently had surgery, massage can help with restoring movement and relieving pain once primary healing has finished.
I discuss medical history with all my clients, some clients may need provide a letter from their doctor or specialist confirming their suitability for a massage.
04
DO I NEED TO TAKE MY CLOTHES OFF FOR A SPORTS MASSAGE?
As a professional massage therapist, I understand that many people worry about how much clothing they will need to remove. I want you to know that I take your comfort and dignity very seriously, and at no point will I ask a client to remove the bottom half of their underwear ("pants" or "knickers" or "boxers" or "trunks"). When working on a client's back, I will need to be able to access the client's skin, so I will ask male clients to remove their top, and female clients I will ask them to lie on their front and then undo their bra once they are comfortable. I will make sure their bra is fastened again before asking them to move. Any areas of a client not being worked on will be covered by a towel (known as "draping", so that your modesty and dignity is protected).
But here's the important bit: If you feel uncomfortable removing any clothing, simply let me know and I will work around your level of comfort to the best of my ability.
05
how is massage reguLATED?
Clients should be aware that massage is not a regulated industry.
What this means is that anyone can call themselves a massage therapist or sports massage therapist, even if they have not had any formal training or insurance!
Like me, you will probably find this a little scary! I recommend anyone thinking of having a massage asks their therapist what qualifications they have, and what professional body they belong to.
This matters because you should make sure that your therapist has had training in massage and therapists who are members of a professional body have had their qualifications checked and are likely to have professional insurance.
06
what qualifications do you have?
I'm a Level 4 Sports Massage Therapist, trained in massage, sports massage, cupping, Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation (sometimes known as "scraping") and sports taping (sometimes called kinesiology taping). I'm also a member of the Federation of Holistic Therapists. In addition to my sports massage qualifications, I am also qualified as a Personal Trainer - so I know all about how your body works...and how to help you when your body isn't working the right way!
